After a reasonable nights sleep sheltering from the strong winds behind the church in le Crotoy we moved back to our spot by the sluice and there were already a few cars there. We later saw them return pushing their bikes across the sand banks after collecting sacks of shellfish – mussels we think :)remembering the wind was still very strong and heavy squally showers came at regular intervals !!! and still people keep arriving with waterproofs to go walking !!!! they are made of stronger stuff than us !!! We would have loved to have walked here but the weather was just too bad and we were happy to have breakfast and watch the locals :) and also the sluice was open again and the torrent was as good as yesterday.
I was still hoping to find a flat water spot in the estuary and get my slalom kit off the roof and make use of the winds but sadly with the tide low I couldn’t find anywhere :( although I am sure there must be somewhere ??? As for the open sea just around the corner it was a wave sailors dream but we didn’t see anyone out :(
We left le Crotoy and headed around the lovely estuary calling in at St Valery,le Hourdel lighthouse, past the many beachhuts of Cayeux sur Mer where we found a fantastic 5 mile track between the shingle beach and the nature reserve and stopped here for lunch watching the cormorants and gull sheltering from the wind !!! we also saw some wonderful horses with foals with the most wonderful punk blond and black manes :) On making it slowly to the end of the bumpy track at Ault and found there was a two metre height barrier and we couldn’t get out and had to go all the way back to Cayeux :) now in need of tea and cake we drove to le Bois Cise a top spot in a gap in the chalk cliffs :) After refreshments we switched on the gps , packed the kagools and headed into the strong wind along the cliff top stopping just short of le Treport :) It was a fantastic walk with every kind of weather, cloud, rain, wind and even some sun !!! We saw gulls, cormorants and even kestrels soaring the cliffs :) The five mile round trip took us over two hours and we made it back to the van just as some heavy rained arrived !!!
We then though we had better head south to try and find some better weather and have stopped for the night on the banks of the Seine just past Rouen at a place called St Adrien famous for it’s chapel in the chalk cliffs and to top a great day there was a rainbow over the van :)
